199. How Early Hardships Build Resilience: Storytelling & Finding Purpose with Whitney Reynolds
We spend so much of our lives trying to protect our children from hardship. But as parents, many of us know that our deepest empathy, resilience, and purpose were forged right in the middle of our own early struggles.
I recently sat down for a special conversation on the podcast with Whitney Reynolds—Emmy-nominated executive producer and host of The Whitney Reynolds Show on PBS.
Whitney opened up about how her own challenging childhood planted the seed for her life’s work. Instead of pursuing standard news that focuses on sensationalism, she set out to create a platform dedicated to safe, compassionate, and hopeful human stories—including featuring Joseph and me on her show.
In this episode, we dive into:
How early life friction can actually plant the seed for lifelong purpose and drive.
Rejection, grit, and what it takes to keep moving forward when doors close.
How we as parents can help our children—especially our neurodivergent kids—see that their struggles don't limit them, but shape their capacity for meaningful lives.
You can catch Joseph and me featured on The Whitney Reynolds Show airing on PBS on Monday, October 26th from 6:30 to 7:00 PM CDT.
Enjoy!
